Lifelong Learning for Social Work Professionals offered at TUCC

School of Social Work Continuing Education

This fall, the School of Social Work at Temple University (SSW) is offering more than 30 hours of approved continuing education courses on Fridays and Saturdays for social work professionals at the Center City campus.

October

For those in need of licensure preparation, October starts with SSW’s LSW/LCSW Exam Preparation course on Friday, October 18, taught by Celeste Vaughan-Briggs. This daylong course will assist participants in developing successful test-taking strategies and analyze material in each of the content areas on the LSW and LCSW exams.

On Saturday, October 19, Nhakia Outland will teach Adopting a Sex-Positive Approach to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) Sexual Health. This course is for social work professionals who want to learn how to discuss sex and sexuality with LGBTQ communities.

November

Instructor Elizabeth Wendel will discuss Applying Supervision and Management Principles to Develop Staff and Deliver Quality Services on Friday, November 8. The course will distinguish between management and supervision and flesh out various aspects of supervision through real-time practice of skills, discussion of case studies and problem-solving, and an overview of the “Good Work Culture Toolkit.”

An afternoon course on November 8 taught by Peter Simonsson focuses on Military Mental Health. The program is designed to aid professionals in understanding the unique mental, social, spiritual and biological needs of military personnel in the aftermath of deployment and combat exposure, and other military stressors.

On Saturday, November 9, Sean Snyder will focus on Professional Quality of Life: Stress and Burnout Prevention. Understand the occupational stressors faced by professional helpers. Gain insights on resources to promote resiliency with a focus on individual strategies and organizational strategies to mitigate or reduce stressors that can lead to fatigue and burnout.

December

On Friday, December 6, Celeste Vaughan-Briggs will facilitate Oncology Social Work: Navigating Patients and Family through Cancer. This morning workshop will increase your understanding of the oncology social worker’s role, the psychosocial needs of oncology patients and their families, and common interventions and treatments.

A December 6 afternoon workshop, Ethical Practice, with Peter Simonsson will discuss ethical values, conflicts and dilemmas that exist in daily social work practice with a critical examination of major ethical challenges that social workers face, particularly in direct practice.

Saturday, December 7,  features two workshops with Jessica DeMarchis.  In the morning, a Mindfulness workshop will focus on experiential learning and explores mindfulness-based practices and interventions for individuals struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and more. An intermediate level Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT ) workshop in the afternoon offers an introduction and overview of TF-CBT as an evidence-based intervention that helps clients and families work through traumatic reactions and symptoms in a creative, flexible, age-appropriate way.

Renowned Temple social work faculty members and other recognized practitioners and leaders in the field teach SSW continuing education courses.
